Glenroy is a railway station in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, located in the suburb of Glenroy, on the Craigieburn railway line. Glenroy is classed as a Premium Station and is in Metcard Zones 1+2.

Glenroy is located between Dowd Place and Hartington Street, with station access from both.

The station consists of two side platforms; Platform 1 has a large brick building with an enclosed waiting area, ticket facilities and toilets, while platform 2 has a smaller brick building. A large Metcard vending machine is located in the waiting area, able to dispense most ticketing options available and also accept notes and coins. A coin-only Metcard vending machine is located at the entrance to platform 2, as well as inside the waiting area. An underpass is situated at the Flinders Street end of the station.

History

Glenroy station opened on 24 January 1887, the railway having opened in 1872 as part of the North East railway to Wodonga.[1] In the 1880s the area was virtually uninhabited country, with the station opening and associated extension of steam operated suburban services to Broadmeadows being driven by the 'Land Boom' in Melbourne of the period and corrupt politicians.[2]

A goods siding was provided in 1908, being extended in 1950 for the nearby flour mill. Hand gates protected the Glenroy Road level crossing until 1965 when boom barriers were provided.[2] The original station buildings were provided in 1886, being reconstructed in 1976,[3] and upgraded to a Premium Station in 1999.[4]
